Kid Critic had the pleasure of finding out about Maine Arts Camp through the wonderful Sue Scheff who wrote an article about the camp, Rick Mades, Director and Candy Cohn, Assistant Director who live in Delray Beach, Florida are excited and passionate people who started the camp for kids to enjoy a great time but be in a safe, fun, friendly environment. Their policy is against bullying, no cliques or exclusion where kids learn to become better people and make new friends but at the same time build themselves with the guidance the camp gives. It is very structured with five activities/electives per day that the child chooses but it goes by an A Day, B Day schedule with ten classes total. One day of every five days is a Trip Day or Specialty Day where the camp goes away to a place like a beach or a somewhere else to play games, go swimming, hiking or more. Campers choose from over 60 activities (see sample activities) to sign up for 10 each 2-week session. Every night the whole camp comes together for fun and creative evening activities. The group that the camp receives is a nicer, friendlier kind and takes action if there is any excluding or bullying whatsoever going on. They offer all kinds of courses with a variety of visual and performing arts, cooking, technology, environmental education, individual lifetime sports, and more. The children can create their own schedules and explore new interests where they can have an opportunity to find other things that they may enjoy. They can also improve their skills in activities they already desire. It is a non-competitive camp and strive for campers to feel comfortable being who they are as they become an integral part of a small, caring community. A positive camp experience can help a child or teen grow tremendously, and that's what it's all about for Maine Arts Camp which is much more than just an arts camp. The camp has moved to Unity College in Unity, Maine which has nicer dormitories, better food including more local produce, herbs and focuses on the environment. Recommended age groups are 8-15 and they can choose from a 2 week or 4 week session and they are introducing a one week specialty camp add-on for ages 11 through 15 for those who attend at least one 2 week session. This will enhance their experience and fine tune their skills in two activity areas. Campers come from all over but mainly from the Boston, Massachusetts area - some fly in from Columbia, others from Florida and even Connecticut.
If you book now by October 15 you will receive an early enrollment discount of $300 off a 2 week session or $400 off a 4 week session.
The tuition rates are as follows:
2 week session - $2700 ($300)
4 week session - $4900 (-$400)
Specialty week $1350
